KIRSTY’S PET CLINIC

DOG BEHAVIOURIST / MASSAGE THERAPIST

“A TRAINED DOG IS A HAPPY DOG”

Many of the dogs left at the Wolfwood rescue centre have had a difficult life. Some are strays; others simply need re-homing, as their owners can no longer look after them. Whatever their origins, these dogs are of various breeds and age. They may have diverse behavioural problems or have received no previous training or socialisation whatsoever; all of these problems can sometimes make it difficult to find new loving homes.

I have been helping Wolfwood on a regular basis to train some of the more problematic dogs. This has been on either a one to one basis, teaching them and Wolfwood how to deal with a variety of problems, or working in a group session to help socialise dogs and teach them to behave calmly around other dogs.

My work extends to spending time with groups of youths, who help train and socialise the rescue dogs

This assists the dogs to gain confidence around children and enables children to learn how to behave around dogs. We have fun

with  different types of training techniques such as teaching the dog to ‘sit and wait’, ‘lie down’, ‘recall’, ‘retrieve’, ‘leave’,

‘tricks’, ‘agility’  and ‘flyball’.

Both Wolfwood and I believe that these training techniques have been beneficial and certainly contributed to them being  successfully rehomed.

When I work with a dog, I try to ensure that its new owners receive practical advice and a routine to follow. This is to assist with the dog settling in at the new home. I am also happy to conduct follow up calls or arrange training classes for the new dog.

I have worked at several rescue centres in Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria and from these experiences  I can confidently state that Wolfwood rescue centre is by far one of the most caring, dedicated and genuine of the centre’s. It is run by a small number of people who give up their own time and money in order to put the animals first; from January 2010 they are a registered Charity. I am proud to be affiliated and look forward to working with them in the future, not just to help train the dogs but to raise awareness of the problems that we see on a daily basis.
